Sandra L. Reynolds, Oakwood Memorial Park, Ottawa IL

Sandra L. Reynolds, 77, of Marseilles, passed away Monday, July 2, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 9 at the Marseilles Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Duane Kaufman officiating.  Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park in Ottawa at a later date.

She was born December 18, 1940 in Taylor County, KY on Bass Ridge to Gilbert and Yvonne (Combs) Farmer.  In 1959, she was married John F. Reynolds of Ottawa, who preceded her in death in 1995.

Sandy was employed as a CNA at Rivershores, worked for Bowl-Rite Lanes for over thirty years, and enjoyed babysitting. Sandy’s door was always open, especially around the holidays, with home cooked meals for family and friends. As a loving grandmother, she enjoyed showing recent pictures of her grandchildren. Sandy was a very independent woman, her house, landscaping and gardens were always immaculate. She loved visiting with friends while getting ice cream at CP’s in the park. She was a die-hard Cubs fan.

She is survived by one daughter, Denna (Marcus Withey) Hall of Ottawa; four sons, John “Ernie” of Ottawa, Mark “Big Head” (Carol) of Wenona, Tom (Heidi) of Ottawa, and Jim “Vern” of Marseilles; ten grandchildren, Mindy, Matthew, Michael, Dylan, Tommy, Jon, Christian, Morgan, Evan, and William Sean; 4 great-grandchildren, Emma Lynn, Finn, Frankie, Piper Willow and one on the way, Reagan Jane; two sisters, Barbara (Benjamin) Flynn of Ft. Meyers, FL and Rachel (Lewis) Pomatto of Ida, IL; five brothers, Gerald of Seattle, WA, Michael of Rock Falls, James “Jabo” (Kathy) of Marseilles, Danny (Linda) of Sweetwater, TN, and Denny of Austin, TX.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her former husband, John; and her oldest brother, Randell Farmer.

Memorials may be given to the Marseilles Church of the Nazarene.

Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

Sandy has been laid to rest in the Garden of Prayer.

Dan R. “Ozzie” Ostby Sr., Oakwood Memorial Park, Ottawa IL

Dan R. “Ozzie” Ostby Sr., age 62, of Ottawa, passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at Loyola University Medical Center from Cardio Myopathy & Congestive Heart Failure.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday August 24 at Gladfelter–Roetker Funeral Home with Prayer Service at 3:45 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am Saturday August 25 at St. Francis of Assisi Church with Father Augustin Kassa officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park.  Pallbearers will be Pat Lakan, Mike Dougherty, Ben Lakan, Jason Wolfe, B.J. Cooke, Ed Kahon and Mike Fleming.  Honorary pallbearers will be Michelle Gansen, Nicole Ramza, Jessica Tetter, Jennifer Margherio, Sarah Kahon, Melissa Willingham and Stephanie Willingham.

Dan was born July 20, 1956 in Ottawa, Illinois, the son of Harry and Katheryn (Brown) Ostby.  He married Marilyn Telfer November 23, 1974 at St. Francis Church in Ottawa.  He is survived by his loving wife Marilyn; a son, Dan R. Ostby, Jr. of Ottawa, Sister In-Laws Jan Ramza, Nancy Biffany, Diane Telfer, Penny Willingham and Brother In Law Bob Olsen Jr.   Dan was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters Terri Crain & Mitzi Davis.

Dan retired in 1997 as a pipefitter for Local 597.   He enjoyed motorcycle racing , and coaching Minor League, Pony League and Little League baseball for many years. He was a member of the church men’s club, Sons of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge.  Dan dearly loved his wife of nearly 44 years, son and family. He cherished spending time with them and his many friends . He was a pillar of strength, kindness, caring and support in the most humble way.  He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.  Memorial contributions may be directed to the family or to Masses at St. Francis Church.

Dan has been laid to rest in the Garden of Psalms.

Anne Reynolds, Oakwood Memorial Park, Ottawa IL

Anne Reynolds, 95, of  rural Ottawa died Saturday, August 18, at her home.  Funeral Services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22, at the Mueller Funeral home in Ottawa with the Rev. David Kipfer, pastor of the Ottawa Catholic Parishes, officiating.  Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park in Ottawa.  Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the services.

Mrs. Reynolds was born on August 17, 1923 in Ottawa to Chris and Grace (Woodward) Grieves. She married John J. Reynolds on May 9, 1943 in Wayland, MO. 

 She is survived by her two youngest children,  Sandy  Hicks, of  Ottawa, and Dale J. (Julie) Reynolds of Utica,  and grandchildren, Cherie (Bill) Reynolds, John (Erica) Hicks, Jennifer Isom, Brian Reynolds, and Mike Ball; great-grandchildren: Lindsay (Joe Meyer) Reynolds, Ethan, Austin, and Jesse Hicks, Brooke Coleman, Sgt. Jacob Isom, U.S.M.C., Nicholas and Nathan Reynolds, Liam Behrens, and her youngest brother John Grieves. 

She was preceded in death by her husband on September 27, 1992,  just before their 50th wedding anniversary, her son, Wayne, son-in-law Wayne Hicks, and siblings, Sonny and Edward Grieves, Gerri Lucas and Lucille Knott..

Her greatest joy was her grandkids, especially her great-grandchildren.  She often commented on how lucky she had been to see 4 generations grow before her eyes.  She loved her family with all her heart. She enjoyed gambling especially trips to “the boat” with family, scratch off tickets, and bingo.  She liked to watch reality TV and hanging out with her best buddy, “Mama” her cat. She was a proud homemaker who loved to cook and entertain family, especially at holidays although she did enjoy passing the torch of holiday celebrations down to her great-granddaughter, Lindsay, in recent years. Throughout her life, she and John travelled many miles by car, mainly to Florida.  They enjoyed fishing and family time on vacations for many years. She loved to dance and she enjoyed life to the fullest.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, John Hicks, Bill Reynolds, and Brian Reynolds, and great-grandsons, Ethan and Austin Hicks, and Joe Meyer. Honorary Pallbearers will be great-grandsons, Jesse Hicks, Sgt. Jacob Isom, Liam Behrens, and Nicholas and Nathan Reynolds.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Dale L. Malaise, Oakwood Memorial Park, Ottawa IL

Dale L. Malaise 72 of Peru, died August 9, 2018 in OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday in the Hurst Funeral Home in La Salle with Rev. Betty Delgado officiating.  Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park in Ottawa.  Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until time of services on Thursday.
Mr. Malaise was born in Ottawa on February 12, 1946 to Ernest L. and Evelyn  (Halloway) Malaise.  He served with the US Army during the Vietnam War.  He worked as a mechanic and retired from the United States Post Office.
Dale loved spending time with his granddaughters and attending their sporting events.  He was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan and enjoyed traveling and driving demolition derby races.
Dale is survived by two daughters, Brandy (Ian) Graske of Peru and Erika (Toby) Blankenship of Marseilles; two granddaughters, Madison and Morgan; one brother Larry (Chris) Malaise of Ottawa.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Ronnie Malaise.

Jordan Harris, Oakwood Memorial Park, Ottawa IL

Jordan Harris, 29, of Ottawa died on Thursday, August 2.  A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 8 at St. Patrick’s  Church in Ottawa with Monsignor Philip Halfacre, officiating.  Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the services.  Arrangements are through the Mueller Funeral Home. Jordan was born on September 22, 1988 in Ottawa to Robert Harris and Carol Cavanaugh.  He was a graduate of Ottawa Township High School, and a member of St. Patrick
Church. He is survived by his mother Carol Cavanaugh, of Ottawa, his father Robert Harris, a sister, Katie (Jason) Bartee of Orlando, FL, his maternal grandmother, Delores Cavanaugh, of Ottawa, and aunts: Terry Cavanaugh and Tracey Mergener, both of Galesburg, Susan (Jack Goodman) Cavanaugh, of Ottawa, Lu (Tim) Aussem, of Ottawa, Jane Hannigan, of Ottawa, Marian Tison, of Harrisburg, IL, and many extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Murray Cavanaugh, and his paternal grandparents, Glen and Hazel Harris. Memorials may be directed to the family for charities to be determine.

William H. “Bill” Meyer, Oakwood Memorial Park, Ottawa IL

William H. “Bill” Meyer of Battle Creek, MI

Bill, age 90, formerly of Ottawa, IL and now of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away at the Bickford Cottage assisted living facility on Thursday, August 2, 2018.

He is survived by his two daughters Rebecca (Jeff) Easton of Berrien Center, Michigan, and Sallie Meyer of Battle Creek, Michigan; and grandson, Andrew Easton of Berrien Center, Michigan Bill was predeceased by his wife of over 66 years Helen (Lyle) Meyerand parents, John Ernest and Lena (Zeiter) Meyer.

Born Nov. 2, 1927 to John and Lena Meyer in Ottawa, Illinois, Bill attended Ottawa grade and high school until he was drafted into the Army during World War II. During the war, Bill was an ambulance driver, light AA fire control equipment repairman and an ordnance parts clerk. Following the army, he was employed at Bakelite Manufacturing and American Hoechst where he retired after 30 years of service.

Bill was a long-time member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Ottawa, Illinois, and for the past ten years he was also a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Battle Creek, Michigan. Bill will be laid to rest at Oakwood Memorial Park in Ottawa, Illinois, on Wednesday, August 8, 2018. Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Oakwood Memorial Park Chapel, with the service following at 1 p.m. and the United States Army Honor Guard bestowing military honors. Memorials are for the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Building Fund,349 Capital Avenue, NE, Battle Creek, MI 49017. George Brown, Oakwood Memorial Park, Ottawa IL

George Brown was born 97.9 years ago in Champaign, IL as the middle son to George R. Brown and Marie Donaldson Brown.  The Brown family had called LaSalle county, IL as home for many generations; however the railroad family moved from LaSalle county to Champaign and eventually settled in Alton, IL.  In Alton, George became an active football player for East Jr. High, Alton High, (graduating in 1938), and Shurtleff College.  He was also active as a newspaper boy, ice delivery boy for Klinke Ice Company while contributing service to DeMolay.

George joined the Army Air Corps, pre-war in early 1941 at Scott Field, IL as a private.   George completed 31 years in the military and loved airplanes, and the mechanics of their operation. During WWII he served as a B-29 Flight Engineer, postwar transitioning to a B-36 as a Flight Engineer, and then to combat operations for B-47’s and tankers with a transition to the SR-71 from Edwards AFB to Beale AFB.  The SR-71 was a particular joy for George.  He was affectionately known as “Mach 4 George”, master crew chief / master recovery chief.  His final duty station was Utapo AFB, Thailand as maintenance commander.  George retired as a Major in 1972 in Sacramento, CA.

George’s next big adventure was bonsai, he practiced this art and science for over 40 years; with most of those years in partnership with his wife, Doris.  Their home property in Carmichael, CA was covered with many bonsai from junipers to pines, wisteria, persimmon and satsuki azaleas.  They had starter trees and mature trees and they loved all varieties and tree styles.  In later years, George became fascinated with satsuki azaleas and that became his major focus.  Active members in American Bonsai Association of Sacramento and the Satsuki Aikokai of Sacramento.  At the death of his wife, Doris and then his son, Stephen; George relocated to Austin, TX with 30 bonsai of his collection and participated in the Austin Bonsai Society.

George was a warm, friendly, jovial man who never was without a story to tell or an experience to share with others.  He was a wonderful husband, father, friend and always generous to every person.  He married his great love in Alton, IL, Doris Lorch (Alton High graduate) in 1945 and they traveled throughout the US and Canada together while he served the USAF.  He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Doris Lorch Brown, his son, Stephen, his brothers Roy and Walter Brown and their spouses, and his parents.  He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Deborah and James Van Cleaf of Buda, Texas.  At George’s request a memorial service is not planned, he will be buried later this year in a private service at Oakwood Memorial Park in Ottawa, IL with his wife, son, parents, grandparents, aunt and uncle.  Any donations should go to the charity of your choice.

Virginia L. Sommerville, Oakwood Memorial Park, Ottawa IL

Ottawa – Virginia L. Sommerville, 97, of Ottawa, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2018 at LaSalle County Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 6, 2018 at Gladfelter-Roetker Funeral Home in Ottawa with Pastor Dave Yim officiating.  Visitation will be at 10 a.m. prior to the funeral service.  Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park.

Virginia was born August 16, 1920 to Ernest Matthew Linthicum and Emily (Baker) Linthicum.  She married Claude Avery Sommerville on May 17, 1943 in Washington D.C.  He passed away in 1985.  She is survived by two sons: Claude A. (Sandra) Sommerville Jr. of Lake Havasu City, AZ, and David E. Sommerville of Ottawa; four grandchildren: Daniel (Ashley) Sommerville of Lake of the Hills, IL, Connie Sommerville of Charlotte, N.C., Justin Sommerville of Ottawa, and Jordan Sommerville of Denver, CO; great-grandchildren, Brooke Avery and Tyce Grant.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Claude, and one sister, Frances Gregg.

After graduating from Central High and Strayer College in Washington D.C., she worked for Johns Hopkins University Laboratory as Executive Secretary of the Chief Accountant.  She moved to Ottawa in 1953, when her husband was transferred to Illinois Bell Telephone Company.  She worked as Secretary to the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce for 20 years.  She was a member of Evangelical United Methodist Church and Ottawa AARP, where she served as secretary for 10 years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Ottawa.

Kay Halterman, Oakwood Memorial Park, Ottawa IL

Kay Halterman, 98, of Ottawa passed away Sunday, July 29, 2018 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Her funeral services will be at 11:00 am Saturday, August 4, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 7:00 pm Friday, August 3, 2018 at Ottawa Funeral Home, and then 10:00 – 11:00, prior to services on Saturday, at Zion Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park.

Born September 18, 1919, to Eber and Nancy Catherine Ferguson in Brownstown, IL, the youngest of 7-Thelma Dorritt, Gladys May, Gensel Gilbert, Irl Alva, Denzel Penelope, Wendel Zemeri, all preceding her in death. Orphaned at age 8, adopted by her aunt and uncle, Oma and Walter Ferguson, in Sheridan, IL. She finished high school and learned cosmetology. She opened her own shop from 1943-2009.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Halterman in 2005. She is survived by her children, Judy (Ron Bockstahler) Wunderlich of Wilmington and Jerry F. (Odessa) Halterman of Homasossa, FL; grandchildren, Heidi (Keith) Zersen, Nancy (Michael) Wind, Karen (Andreas) Keipert, of FL, Samantha Halterman of IL, and Austin Halterman of FL; and her great-grandchildren, Andrew (Elizabeth) Zersen, Samantha Halterman, of IL, Dr. Stefanie (Jesse) Bickel) Wind of AL, Kathryn Keipert, Nik Wind, of FL, and Eric Wind of CA.

Kay Studied advanced cosmetology at Southern Illinois University and received her diploma from Governor Stratton. She received the Golden Phoenix award from Friendship Village and spend many years giving free haircuts, permanent waves, etc. She was on their board for five years. She was involved with Miss Illinois and Miss America Pageants for 20 plus years. She worked with the Jackson 5 and gave Michael Jackson the necklace he wore on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Volunteering was her middle name. She was a pink lady hospital volunteer for 30 plus years. She was Cosmetologist of the Year for the State of Illinois in 1982. The competition was in Washington, DC; but Nancy Regan’s hairdresser won. She did not feel bad-she was the only senior citizen on the stage.

Her sixty years brought to her the front page of the Sunday Chicago Tribune, along with the Pope dying and Robert Redford’s movie getting an Oscar.

The State of Illinois honored her for her 60 years of service and documentation was presented by Careen Gordon, State Representative.

Kay was very active at the Zion Lutheran Church, she loved the Lord with heart, mind, and soul. She loved Ottawa and its people, and she loved her family and would want us to keep pursuing every breath and heartbeat.
