Charles Curtis Hearn, Oakwood Memorial Park, Ottawa, IL

Charles Curtis Hearn passed away on September 4th.  Mr. Hearn was born October 31st, 1930 to Guy B. and Ethel May Hearn in Paducah, Kentucky. He married Madge P. Korff on June 26th, 1955 in Evansville, Indiana.

He served in the Army as a paratrooper with the famed 11th Airborne during the Korean Conflict from 1953-1955.

He was a graduate of Indiana State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and a minor in Library Science. He received a Master of Arts degree in Educational Administration and Counseling from Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky in the year of 1961.

He was a bookmobile librarian in Terre Haute, Indiana and a high school librarian for McCracken County Schools in Paducah, Kentucky. In 1959 he came to Ottawa to be the librarian at Ottawa High School. He continued in that position until retirement in 1991.

He was a life member of the National Education Association and Illinois Education Association. He was a book reviewer for the non-profit Library Book Selection Service in Bloomington, Illinois.

He was an Elder in the Ottawa Church of Christ for many years and a long time Bible class teacher. He was a member of the Ottawa Kiwanis Club for 35 years and a sponsor of the Ottawa High School Key Club for many years.

He is survived by; three sons Jeff (Sandy) Hearn of Mountain Home, Arkansas; Jay (Sally) Hearn of St. Charles, Illinois; and Douglas (Norah) Hearn of Peru, Illinois; along with eight grandchildren, Isaac, Rachel, Charlie, Claudia, Henry, Olivia, Will and Adelaide; great granddaughter Mila Rose; nephew Lee Sternberg of Metropolis, Illinois; & twin nephews Charles (Betty) Sternberg of Princeton, Indiana and Leslie (Judy) Sternberg of Nashville, Tennessee.

Charles was preceded in death by his wife Madge P. (Korff) Hearn, both parents, 2 brothers; Andrew & Guy; 2 sisters; Faye & Dorothy.

There will be a private family memorial held to celebrate his life.

Memorial donations may be directed to the Ottawa Church of Christ or the Ottawa High School Library.

Charles was laid to rest in the Garden of the Last Supper at Oakwood Memorial Park.
