Vernon A. Mitchell Sr., 97, of Ottawa, passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at the Illinois Veterans Home in LaSalle surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2023 at the Mueller Funeral Home in Ottawa with Rev. Sherry Stevenson, of Crossbridge Community Church, officiating. Full military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post 33 Honor Guard. Burial will be at Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of services on Thursday, at the funeral home.
Vernon was born on September 24, 1925 in Donna, TX to Byron and June (Penner) Mitchell. He is a veteran of the US Navy and served during WWII. Vernon married Elizabeth B. Spicer on June 7, 1958 at the First Church of the Nazarene in Ottawa. He worked as a pipefitter, at Marseilles Plumbing and Heating for over 40 years, and after his retirement, Vernon worked for many years at Pleasant View Nursing Home. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Ottawa.
He is survived by his two sons, Vernon (Gail) Mitchell, Jr. of Bourbonnais and Steven Mitchell of Ottawa; two grandchildren, Joshua (Ashleigh) Mitchell and Kristin (Ilija) Stojcevski; and three great-grandchildren, Caliana and Madilyn Stojcevski and Hayden Mitchell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Byron and June; his wife, Elizabeth Mitchell; two brothers, Ralph E. Mitchell and Kenneth Mitchell, Sr.; and a sister, Olieta Mitchell in infancy.

Vernon has been laid to rest in the Garden of the Last Supper at Oakwood Memorial Park.
