Ottawa – Virginia L. Sommerville, 97, of Ottawa, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2018 at LaSalle County Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 6, 2018 at Gladfelter-Roetker Funeral Home in Ottawa with Pastor Dave Yim officiating.  Visitation will be at 10 a.m. prior to the funeral service.  Burial will be in Oakwood Memorial Park.

Virginia was born August 16, 1920 to Ernest Matthew Linthicum and Emily (Baker) Linthicum.  She married Claude Avery Sommerville on May 17, 1943 in Washington D.C.  He passed away in 1985.  She is survived by two sons: Claude A. (Sandra) Sommerville Jr. of Lake Havasu City, AZ, and David E. Sommerville of Ottawa; four grandchildren: Daniel (Ashley) Sommerville of Lake of the Hills, IL, Connie Sommerville of Charlotte, N.C., Justin Sommerville of Ottawa, and Jordan Sommerville of Denver, CO; great-grandchildren, Brooke Avery and Tyce Grant.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Claude, and one sister, Frances Gregg.

After graduating from Central High and Strayer College in Washington D.C., she worked for Johns Hopkins University Laboratory as Executive Secretary of the Chief Accountant.  She moved to Ottawa in 1953, when her husband was transferred to Illinois Bell Telephone Company.  She worked as Secretary to the Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce for 20 years.  She was a member of Evangelical United Methodist Church and Ottawa AARP, where she served as secretary for 10 years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Ottawa.

Virginia has been laid to rest in the Garden of the Last Supper.
