Sally Marten Schmitz, 78, of Ottawa, Illinois passed away Thursday, January 28, 2016 in her home, with her children at her side.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 1, 2016 at the Ottawa Funeral Home with Rev. David Kipfer of St. Columba Church officiating. Visitation will be 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, January 31 at the funeral home. Entombment will be at the Shrine of Rest Mausoleum in Oakwood Memorial Park.
Sally was born on Friday the 13th, August, 1937 in Ottawa, to Robert and Elizabeth (Nelson) Marten. She married Joseph W. (Wonderful) Schmitz on July 18, 1980 in Ottawa. Joe and Sally were happily married for 29 1/2 years. Joe passed away on January 28, 2010, exactly six years to the date of Sally’s death.
Sally retired as office manager from the Chamber of Commerce after dedicating 15 years to the Ottawa Community. Prior to that, she worked at Peter F. Ferracuti & Associates and then for J. J. Grundy, Inc. as an accounts payable manager. She attended Illinois State University, Missouri Western University, and Illinois Valley Community College. Sally was a member of St Columba Church. She had a passion for the game of bridge and belonged to two bridge clubs, with very dear friends.
She is survived by two children, David (Maria) Usrey of Bloomington and Melissa (Paul) Tipple of Ottawa; six grandchildren, Mackenzie, Jacob, Jaelyn, Liam, Owen, and Joey; and her brother Robert Marten of Ottawa. Sally was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joe; a sister, Joan Aicher and brother-in-law Wayne Aicher; and her sister-in-law, Diane Marten.
Pallbearers will be John, Jeff and Jay Aicher, Tod Misener, Rob Marten, Jacob Usrey, and Liam, Owen and Joey Tipple.
Due to her love of the church and her passion for reading, memorials may be directed to St. Columba Church Restoration or the Reddick Library.
Sally is laid to rest in the Shrine of Rest Mausoleum, Sanctuary of Peace.
